From stone to anvil

The secret of forming metal has been known for around 8,000 years.

Already since about 6000 BC BC people have started to use naturally occurring metals such as gold, silver

and to process copper in the cold state into sheet metal.

It is likely that the metals were forged in a hot state in Egypt over 5,000 years ago.

First a stone was used as a hammer and the anvil has been known since the Iron Age.

Basics:

Forging is a type of forming => more precisely free-forming, as the material can flow freely between the hammer and anvil.

All metals have a crystalline structure.

If a raw piece of steel is knocked into shape without any loss of material, it is colloquially referred to as forging in our latitudes.

The main advantage of forging is to convert the formerly often coarse-grained cast structure into a fine-grained structure. This increases the strength values without a decrease in toughness and ductility.

In forging, a distinction is made between hot, warm and cold forging.

The distinguishing criterion is the temperature at which the workpieces are machined.

Hot forging is traditional forging on a forging hammer at temperatures of up to 1200 ° C. This process achieves perfect formability with high strength.

Cold forging is called (cold) forming. In this forging form, the base material is not heated.

Increased strength is achieved by reducing elongation => so-called work hardening
