From stone to anvill

The secret of metal forming has been known for around 8,000 years.

Since about 6000 BC. Around 1000 BC, humans began cold processing naturally occurring metals such as gold, silver and copper into sheet metal.

The metals were probably forged in a hot state more than 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

First a stone was used as a hammer and since the Iron Age the anvil has also been used.

Basics:

Forging is a type of forming => precise freeforming, as the material can flow freely between the hammer and anvil.

All metals have a crystalline structure.

If a raw piece of steel is struck into shape without any loss of material, then in our part of the world it is colloquially referred to as forging.

The main advantage of forging is that it transforms what was often a coarse-grained cast structure into a fine-grained structure. This increases the strength values without reducing the toughness and ductility.

When forging, a distinction is made between warm, semi-warm and cold forging.

The distinguishing criterion is the temperature at which the workpieces are processed.

Hot forging is the traditional forging on a blacksmith's hammer at up to 1200°C. This process achieves perfect formability with high strength.

Cold forging is called a (cold) forming. With this forging form, the base material is not heated.

Increased strength is achieved through the reduction in elongation => the so-called strain hardening
